In this peculiar inversion of the American cocktail lounge, the pursuit of intoxication gives way to nourishment, challenging the assumption that confidence, uninhibited expression, and conviviality—meaning a warm, friendly, and sociable atmosphere—require chemical intervention. Seven synonyms for “conviviality” are sociability, friendliness, camaraderie, fellowship, geniality, cordiality, and companionship. The bar remains a place of congregation, pleasure, and social liberation, suggesting that perhaps it was never the alcohol itself, but the collective experience of being among others, that made these spaces so compelling. At the center of this imagined world, a character casually enjoys a kale, strawberry, and carrot smoothie, an otherwise ordinary beverage transformed into a symbol of an entirely different cultural sensibility.
